Or how I learn to stop worrying about the horrifying crawl of time and how
I could be wasting the time I have by enjoying a hobby and love the bomb
Below are Films, Tv Shows and Video games Ranked and discussed by me for you. I will run through the good the bad and the down right terrible. I love media and stories so lets have a look at them together.
The Best Films That Start With A: In no particular order
Annihilation:
Annihilation is a word I can now spell. Alex Garland wrote one of my all time favourite films (Sunshine) and his directoral debut was great too (Ex Machina) and so this follow up had high expectations. This is based on a book and it is a stellar film. Benedict Wong returns from Sunshine which is nice to see but mostly there are new comers here with Natalie Portman leading a mostly female cast with Tessa Thompson and that crazy chick from The H8ful 8.
Annihilation is a slow burn which is right up my street and the ending of the film makes it worth it, think Arrival, oh shit, Arrival needs to be added to this list. The Story never really drums up but never slows either, its a crawl through dread and it has some great scenes. I love all of the character deaths here, something that Sunshine also did brilliantly and the ending is great. Oscar Isaac is great in this too and he was even better in Ex Machina.
A Few Good Men
You can't handle the truth! Need I say more? A classic film. Aaron Sorkin wrote the powerful script, Nicolson and Cruise elevate it with powerful performances. It's one of the very best courtroom dramas and one of the greatest films made.
All Quiet On The Western Front
German sadness squared.
Apollo 13
Probably the most intense film in the Apollo series, the first 12 never quite got the pacing right.
Amelie:
I haven't watched it, remembered it was a film and put it down because everyone at uni told me I HAVE to like it. Same thing happened with Her which is why I haven't seen it.
Ad Astra
I love this film. When I was 22 I went on an little adventure to Bulgaria to find my own father who I had never met, it was a much smaller odyssey but it had its own twists and turns but in the end the result was the same as in this movie, missing only the space pirates and accidental murder. Ad Astra is a great film. If you like directoral commentaries on your films do not watch this one, the guy made me like the film less :D Brad Pitts performance was like The Assassination of Jesse James, moving but subtle. The score is also top notch, I love Max Richter.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
It wouldn't get made today and maybe that's for the best but I love so much of it, I like the sequel a little more though and so I wanted to put them together. Not my favourite Jim Carrey film but it's still good.
Arrival
I forgot this film existed when I started this list but then remembered it for its ending. The film is quietly intriguing throughout the runtime, with great performances that anchor it but where the film really shines is the end and it brings everything together the same way that Blade Runner does in its final moments. I will say that I'm not entirely sure it makes sense but I have been pondering it for a while so whether it makes sense or not, it's a good time.
Alien:
These are in no particular order ok but if they were Alien would win. It is the GOAT horror film (sorry The Thing). Ridley Scott is my favourite director of all time and Alien is his crown jewel though Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down (which by the way Quinten Tarentino named the best film of the 2000s) and the incredibly underrated Kingdom of Heaven to name a few.
Armageddon:
One thing that I really appreciate about this film is how everything is a problem, nothing is easy and suspense is drained out of every single thing that happens. It really is a masterclass in creating action suspense to be fair to Michael Bay. Also I love how Bay just did not give a fuck. Afleck questioned him on the whole oil drillers becoming astronauts and he was told to "Shut the fuck up". Classic. Also Bay is a solid director, someone needs to make popcorn movies ok, we can't all be fucking Darren Aronofsky or whatever his name is that directed Mother.
I didn't like A Simple Favour, I haven't seen the sequel, I mention it because it popped into my head. Remember that film.
A million ways to die in the West: Is it a good film? Not massively. Is it fun enough to watch, yeah sure, I like it, Neeson is great, Theron is great, hell even Pheobe Buffet's brother is good, everyone except Macfarlane himself who is a little outclassed all around. However, cant say he doesn't know how to pull in a good cast or create an entertaining film. I liked it. Near the beginning an old guy farts from his penis, im sold.
Hey remember Assassin's Creed? Me neither. I remember the dude running away at the end just teleporting away from Mr Sharkbender and that's about it, oh and that really really weird Animus that they created for the film. I dunno man, I really liked the idea and I love the Shark but man, what a let down.
Along Came Polly? I've not seen it. Has this article turned into just naming films beginning with A? Have I mentioned your favourite yet.
Along Came a Spider: I hope Polly isn't a anacnaphobe.
Arancophobia: Just remembered this film, crazy that they made this film about just, slightly bigger spiders and yet the only spider film to ever beat it is Eight Legged Freaks, Sting from (shit, was it 2024 or 2025) whenever wasn't great. This films jumping spiders make me want to cry. One time I was packing away from tent after living in it for 6 months and there was a spider in there that I should have been charging rent. He was massive. I created a Richie sized whole in the canvas like I was Scooby-Doo.
Anaconda: Was thinking about bugs and creepies. I'm not like Indiana Jones, I don't mind Anaconda's or snakes in general. This film is so weird man. Ice Cube, Mariah Carey, Owen Wilson all star in this film and if that was it you'd maybe be convinced it was real if you were a time traveller btu then throw in Oscar nominee John Voight into the mix and it shuffles things, THEN convince that time traveller that he is the worst actor in this film.
Aces High: I have not seen this but I asked my mum for films starting with A and this is what she came out with. There was an Aces related film I watched once for research into WW1 planes for a documentary I was working on. Is this it? I can't remember. That wasn't the best, the best old aircraft movie is The Battle for Britain and we all know it.
Ants! How could I forget Ants! Ants is what you get when you ask your mum for Bug life and she says "we have bugs life at home". Its a good film, I can't remember who the villain is, Bugs life has that bastard Grass hopper who is a real bastard.
Alladin: I asked my Step dad for films beginning with A and his child-like brain really came in handy. Alladin he said and I haven't seen the Will Smith one because, why the hell would I watched the Will Smith one, don't get me wrong, I really like Will Smith (despite the....issues) but you cant replace the greats and the original film is perfectly fine the way it is. Same with Lion King which I did watc the remake off, does it look nice? Yes. Is it just a cgi nature documentary with bad lip syncing, also yet. Also how did Donald Glover and Beyonce make a song together and it was shit?
Is there an Arnold Schwarzengger film beginning with A. It's 21.09, lemme see how long it takes to think of one.
Aftermath: It's 21.10 motherfuckers! I have seen every single Arnold Schwarzengger film, I went to one of those Black Tie events with him in too and couldn't afford anything other than to attend but he is awesome and his films are awesome. This is a slow burn but a good film and showed Arnie's tender side. The actual film itself is a little like that thing that happened in Breaking bad season 2, or 3, where the air flight controller messes up and kills a bunch of people. It's a revenge film in a very loose sense and a good film overall.
Amiteville Horror: Have I spelt that right? Who knows. I'm talking the Ryan Reynolds one because that's the only one I've seen ok? I have seen a bunch of scary ass documentaries on this when I was younger because my nan was facinated and didn't believe in Watershed. This film is solid but suffers from the same thing all of these kinds of films suffer from, they are formulaic and all end with them leaving which is what they should have started with. Plus is any Haunted House film going to beat The Conjuring? I dunno.
Abigail: Melissa Barerra needed work and just like Rohan the dudes that made the great Scream V (or just Scream for whatever reason) and the average at best Scream VI answered. They made Abigail which has the dude that shot my high-school crush in it, he was a mercenary in Lost and he shot Ben Linus' daughter who happened to be the love of my life. I have not forgiven him. He was in Smoking Aces, Wolverine Origins and The Strain as well. The film is apparently good, it's another one on my list but holy shit is that list long. Dan Steven and Giancarlo Esposito are in this too. Good cast.
Man do you guys remember how good Lost was way back when? It was so good. There was nothing like it. Fuck you J.J man, you built us up and then shat on our rooftops.
Abducted: Taylor Launtner finished Twlight and I thought he was cooked but he actually did alright with this one, I really don't mind it for what it is. He was also in Cuckoo and he was good in that too. Sure he did Ridiculous 6 and then disappeared but really that was all you could do.
Atonement: Are you sad right now? Do you want to be? This is just a sad film and its sad because it happened maybe not exactly like this with these people but in general. Sad film broski.
Absolutely Everything: Robin Williams voices the dog, sold. Not the best film. I love a big of the Pegg though so....meh.
How the fuck did I forget Apocolpyse Now, a film that crafted the most brutal depiction of Vietnam to date and that had Marlon Brandon saying a bunch of random shit that probably didn't make sense but was also really intriguing. The cinematography here is worth the price of admission alone, classic film.
A Wrinkle In Time: I haven't seen it, but apparently it's good.
I had to come back to my computer, I was reading a book (Into the Drowning Deep if you must know) and it came to me. FUCKING ANT-MAN! Now I need to do a Marvel Ranking because I have some things to say but damn Ant-Man 1 was shockingly not terrible, though if things keep their mass Mr Pym when they shrink how can you carry around a FUCKING TANK ON A FUCKING KEY CHAIN! I apologise. I'm tired. Ant-man as a trilogy is a mess, kicking off Kang with Ant-man 3 was wild and that film is just a mess, what the hell is even going on for most of that film. The second one suffered from a lack of focus mostly, like who even is the villain, the lab is shrunk and can be picked up, HOW, i thought things that we shrunk keep their mass! Isn't that why Ant-Man can do ibg boy punches when he's small? Am I missing something! I mean he even rides on an arrow in Cap 3, how! I think I need to sleep and then google this. I went on Reddit, they don't know either.
I'm about to start the letter B, After Earth! Not worth saying anymore than that is it. Pretty wank.
So there we have it, every film that begins with the letter A that I could think of today. Tomorrow I will be doing B.
